I Left the House and It Was Good

No rest for the wicked. I work today, even though it's a holiday. Someone asked me the other day if I had Monday off and I said, "No. I only get days off for Jesus." And when the United States celebrates independence (4th of July) and oppression (Thanksgiving.) Well, and New Year's, but whatever. It was funny at the time.

I was planning on going to my mom and dad's to SEE THE BABY over the weekend, but my dad called on Friday night and said they weren't coming. And I was DEVASTATED! Totally and completely devastated. I had no idea I was so looking forward to seeing him. I cried and everything. It was not pretty. And I was still pouting on Saturday morning, but Dancing Queen to the rescue! We had a sewing party! Now, I used to sew alot. I love my sewing machine. I love how it hums. But it's been under wraps since I moved to Sioux Falls. I just never really had a desire to sew and then most recently, when I had the desire, I had no place to set it up in Tiny Apartment. So, Dancing Queen invited me to bring my machine over to her house and play. We made cloth grocery bags. I know. Bags. But whatever. They're cool. I'M COOL. I AM COOL! SAY IT.Now, I've kind of been on a self imposed journey of isolation. I don't know why. It's just how I am. I didn't want to DO anything, I didn't want to GO anywhere and I mostly just went to work and went home to my slippers and yoga pants. No meetings, either. (Gasp!) It wasn't horrible, it was just my winter hermitage, but this weekend I was ready to break out. And I did. So, on my way home from the sewing party, I texted Cowgirl and asked her what she was doing and the reply? "Meeting a bunch of people for dinner." And she didn't invite me along. Which I had to laugh about. Because frankly? No one invites me to do things anymore because I always turn them down. The hermitage, see? But I know that I'm welcome, so I text back, "Can I come?" And then didn't hear A THING! And then I got all freaked out. "Oh my God! They're staging an intervention to get me out of the house! They're going to meet for dinner to discuss what to do about my isolation and then they're coming over here to confront me! Oh my God! I have to get out of the house before they get here!"

Seriously. That's what went through my head. I have indeed, been on the receiving end of such conversations in the past when someone thinks I've gone over the edge. So I fled! I left the house. I figured I could get to the mall before anyone stopped me. But on my way, Cowgirl called and said, "Kate! I didn't hear my phone! We just ordered. What do you want? We'll order something for you! Get OVER HERE! We're having so much fun!" Um. Yeah. That. No intervention. So I went and it was lovely and it was the perfect kind of evening.

And then because I had so much fun that night, I got up and went to a meeting on Sunday morning and then breakfast with the whole crew and then guess what? I went ice skating!!!! I haven't been ice skating for probably 10 years! But I went and my friend held my hand for about eight go-arounds, and then she let go and I WAS SKATING AGAIN! It was so much fun!

Okay, I have so much to tell you. There's more! And then because I made a cake for Tiny last week and my friend Long Haired Hippie found out and was pouting, I decided to make something for him. And at dinner on Friday night, he was asking about Volcano Cake and I found a recipe and I MADE THEM AND THEY WERE GOOD! Go see on my cooking blog! He came by to pick them up - drive by bakery service. Then Tiny came over to return my cake carrier and stayed for coffee and took the rest of my chocolate mint brownies home with him. See how social I can be?

It's exhausting.

My entire life is a journey of isolation. Don't feel bad about it!

How'd you make those bags?

Cloth grocery bags = total superiority. True.

I love that you're sewing (now that holiday gifts are behind us, I have a bunch of DIY sewing projects for my house and I cannot wait!

And I love the friendship you have with Cowgirl. Shouldn't we all be able to invite ourselves (and then be welcomed with open arms) to join our friends. If only everyone approached life with such simplicity!

I'm in LOVE with your grocery bags. You should post them on your local Craigslist site. I bet you'd sell some!!

Do you have a pattern or did you just wing it?

I so completely want a sewing machine. Really Bad! I begged for a cheap-o ($75) for Christmas, but didn't get one. *sniff sniff*

I want one! Or two. Or twenty.

Oh, I think those exact same kinds of things. And then my friends say things like that. So I totally get what you mean.

For those of you who are wondering, I really did wing the bags. The first one was way too long and we had trouble attaching the handles (too much layering of fabric.) I googled homemade cloth grocery bags and read some tutorials and watched some videos and then we went at it. I figured - it's just a BAG! And it was fun!

My DIL made me grocery bags for Christmas with my The Good Cook logo on them. I love them!!

So far as being a hermit. With me it's a winter thing. It's 6:03 and I'm in my pajamas, slippers and robe. Cuddled up for the night. Oh, and I only took pajamas off at noon to go to Barnes and Noble for books to read while being a hermit. Sigh... that's winter time.

Oh my goodness I'm sorry i haven't visited here for a while!

Days off for Jesus...that's pretty funny.

Sewing...I'm so glad there are people in the world who like to do it, because it's on my list of Things I Don't Do. In fact, I rank it with Algebra. I can, however, appreciate it and your work is pretty. :)

Great job on the bags. And you KNOW I think you're awesome for sewing them up.

I'm a bit hermitty then I feel all butt-hurt that I'm not partying with all my friends when they're doing stuff. I know, dumb!
