You Put The Lime In the Coke, You Nut

I made guacamole. I bought an avocado and a lime, I picked cherry tomatoes and pulled an onion from the garden, smashed it all up with salt and pepper and for a first ever try at guacamole, I did pretty damn good. It is my lunch today along with a tomato and mozzarella stack drizzled in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It's a good thing I planted a garden, because I'm seriously cash poor at the moment. My grocery list was this: whole wheat pasta, avocado, lime, butter, fresh mozzarella, tortillas (okay, I could have made these, but I bought them anyway) and some olive oil. My market list was peppers and corn. The rest has to come from the garden and my pantry for a couple weeks because it's all I've got right now. I'd say I'm doing a pretty good job. I'm running tonight. 12 more days until my 5K. I'm not even sure what we're running tonight. I don't look anymore. Otherwise, I get anxious and think I won't be able to do it. So I show up in my running shoes with my watch and my iPod and when she says what the drill is, I program my timer and I go. I no longer think about it. I just do. How fast do people run 5Ks? I mean, should I have a goal other than to finish? I know that I want to run the whole way without stopping to walk. That's my number one goal. But is there a time frame that people work with? I have no clue. Someone asked me if I was going to finish in 32 mintes or less. And I was all, "What? What are you talking about? I don't know! What's magic about 32 minutes?!"

But guess what? They're starting another running club on the 21st of September and I'm already signed up. What?! Me? Signed up to do this again? What has come OVER me?! Our trainer put the question out whether we wanted to do a beginner's 10K group or an intermediate 5K and I even though I said intermediate 5K, I know I'll do it either way. Seriously. What has come over me? I'm a runner. Me. A runner. This does not cease to amaze me each and every time I say it.

And I need some sort of lucky charm for my race. Any ideas? Wear my socks inside out?

Just finish the race, you're not competing with anyone. I say ignore that 32 minute person and just put on your ipod and go go go.

My first 5K, I set a "goal" for myself of 45 minutes or less, but my REAL goal was just to run the whole time. The adrenaline and fun kicked in, and I made it in way under 45 minutes! I was so happy!! Better to set a realistic goal and surprise yourself than to set a crazy goal and be disappointed. The whole point is the fun of the race. If you've never been to one, it's a LOT of fun - I caught the fever just watching my husband compete (which is why I started doing them - I'm not competitive like him, so I set my own goals).

I loved running in skirts, so I wore my favorite purple running skirt and pretended my shoes were magical ones that helped me fly to the finish. Yes, I'm 33 and a professional, but it HELPED! With every step, I thought, wow these shoes are amazing - of course I'll finish this thing!!

I'M SOOOOO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK :)

Well, back when I was young and skinny, my best 5K time was 16:12. Today, there is no way I could run that far.

Just finish. Don't worry about time until your second 5K.

The goal of your first race of any distance should be to finish. Don't worry about your time. Take in the experience. It'll be incredible!

I don't know why I chuckle at 32 minutes. It's just so specific. I say, just focus on finishing. You'll do awesome.

Since your garden is fueling your body and soul, maybe you should bring something from your garden for good luck. Tuck a leaf in your sock, or a string bean in your pocket.

For lucky charms wear your underwear on the outside!

No?

I just thought the socks inside out wasn't enough of a statement for you and your bold personality Kate.

Good luck with the running.

My goal of every race I've done so far has just been to run then entire way and cross the finish line with a smile on my face! And since this is your first 5K, you will set a new PR (personal record) - yay Kate!!!

I think for your first race, your goal should be just to finish. That is my goal for the marathon! As you run more races, you can try to improve your time if you want.

Yay for signing up for another group!

I wear these earrings for lucky charm (in studs) - http://www.tarmadesigns.com/product/running/100459/running-gal-earrings.

Too bad we can't grow avocados!

Your first goal is to run your first 5k. Your second goal is to finish it, whether you have to walk a tad or not. The next 5k you will increase on your first 5k goal and so on and so on. Mark your time on your race bib so you can always look back. Remember, the first mile will be slow (so many people!) But you will find your pace and you will finish!!

I'm so excited for you!!

TBHITW could run a 5k in under 20 minutes. Me, around 28 minutes. That gave him 8 minutes to get a bottle of water ready for me and meet me at the finish line with a hug. :-) memories...
