The Green Shoots

Guess what? Asparagus is just now coming in to season. I didn't KNOW that! It looked so pretty at the market, so skinny and vibrant green. I thought it was much later in the season when it's good. Apparently, it starts now.

Also, I did my research, and you cannot plant asparagus in a pot. I know it has to grow for three years or so before you harvest, so I thought I'd just throw some in a pot and haul it along for my moves. Because who knows where I will be in three years? But that's no good, because asparagus grows horizontally under the ground.

I will not be growing asparagus at my house. Although, I do have a secret spot where I might throw some in the ground. Now how sneaky would THAT be?!

Asparagus grows horizontally? I did not know that! Love it and glad it's back. :)

Yes, it does! That's how the root system develops. Across and down. Deep down, apparently!

You could be the Johnny Appleseed of asparagus. How wild would that be?

I honestly never knew the asparagus season. Probably because I don't go to the farmer's market until spring, when it's plentiful, I guess I assumed that spring was its peak!

In season now, while it's cold? Three years? Horizontally? Who the hell knew? Very interesting!

I always want Fancyhats to grow asparagus. And he did once. Three years later, there will still just a couple of stalks.

I think you should do it, though.

I read this on my blackberry in the parking lot while waiting for Whole Foods to open yesterday. As soon as I went inside? All kinds of displays of asparagus! In February! It's a good thing.
