A Beautiful White Christmas

ACCUMULATIONS...ALL TOLD FROM TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT... SNOWFALL TOTALS OF 12 TO 18 INCHES ARE EXPECTED. SOME AMOUNTS NEAR 20 INCHES ARE NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION ALONG I 90 IN SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA. ICE ACCUMULATIONS TODAY WILL BE EXTREMELY
MINIMAL.

* WIND AND VISIBILITY...WINDS WILL TURN TO THE NORTH AND NORTHWEST ON THURSDAY...LASTING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT. 20 TO 35 MPH WINDS WILL BE COMMON ON THURSDAY...INCREASING ON FRIDAY TO 25 TO 40 MPH. THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE ALONG AND WEST OF THE JAMES RIVER VALLEY IN SOUTHEAST AND SOUTH CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA. THE WIND COMBINED WITH THE SNOWFALL WILL LIKELY REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES.

Check that OUT! We're going to be snowed in for Christmas! And I am SO excited! So excited in fact, that I went to the grocery store with the whole of Sioux Falls last night. I got the last cart. Seriously. When do they run out of carts?! But I knew it was going to be a madhouse, so I decided to enjoy it. I think I was the only person in there that was smiling and humming Christmas carols to myself. I'm sure I looked like a raving lunatic. But since negotiations for going to my mom and dad's were off as of yesterday, I decided to make Christmas dinner for everyone else that had plans that are falling through. No clue how many people will show up. Could be one, could be ten, but I'm prepared. Here's the holiday menu!

White Christmas of 2009
My Famous Beef
Throw a roast in the crock pot, add a package of dry onion soup mix, a package of dry italian seasoning and some beef broth. Cook it forever until it falls apart.
Whole Grain Buns
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
I cook carrots and whole cloves of garlic with my potatoes and then I rough mash them with butter. They are gorgeous and creamy.
The Bestest Salad Ever Made with Awesomesauce Dressing aka Shaved Asparagus and Arugula Salad with Black Forest Bacon and Poached Quail Egg
I emailed RR yesterday to see what he would suggest for a zesty green side dish to accompany a heavy beef and potatoes meal. This is an awesome suggestion and he suggested the substitutions for me since I live in the backwoods and can't get things like cippollini onions and quail eggs. I'm instead going to use regular medium eggs and red onion and add the splash of balsamic vinegar that he forgot to mention in the recipe. And get this! I got the VERY LAST package of organic baby arugula at the store. I win.
Cream Puffs with Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Filling, Chocolate Sauce and Whipped Cream
This is a family tradition of mom's homemade cream puffs, filled with (usually) peppermint ice cream, but since I won with the arugula, I did not win with the ice cream. So Mint Chocolate Chip it is and then covered in my dad's homemade chocolate sauce.

Do you have any idea how excited I am? I mean, I love snow and I LOVE getting snowed in. I love that feeling of being trapped in my house with lights and coffee and cats and slippers and warmth, music, smiles and books. And then I love bundling up and going for a walk - tromping through the snow piles just because I can. I'm kind of tearing up just telling you about it. I think this is going to be my best Christmas ever!

Mmmmm, can I come?

I'll bring dessert.

Even though you have some already, we could always use more, right?

Oh man, I'm so jealous! I wish I could be up there with you - not so much because I enjoy 20 inches of snow as much as you, but because I haven't been in a ton of snow in ages (I've lived in the South more than 15 years now) AND because I want to eat my weight in that food you're making. I just moved and have nothing planned NOTHING!! for Christmas. My poor hubs - we may be eating frozen pizza if I don't get my act in gear!

So as an alternative, I'm going to figure out how to get us to SD despite the massive storm.

Don't tell anyone, but I'm excited about being snowed in for Christmas too.

I wish I could get snowed in at your house!!!! Sounds awesome. I'd love to spend a snowy afternoon eating delicious food & reading or playing games & chatting our fool heads off. :) Sounds heavenly. Send some snow OUR way!!

Oh, we are soul sisters on this one. I totally get excited when that kind of snow fall is coming. I don't freak out that my commute home from work is doubled or even tripled. I don't get impatient when the grocery store lines end in the back of the store. I don't grumble over having to shovel once, twice or even three times. I absolutely love it. I'm excited that at least one of us is going to enjoy a true white Christmas this year. You deserve it, Kate!

I'm jealous. I kept hearing about snow, possibly today - but it snowed a little over last night and now it's already melting. I didn't even get to experience the actual snowing!

Merry Christmas! Your meal sounds delicious.

I do believe this will be a wonderful Christmas for you!
You can't change the past, the present is working, and your future looks very bright!
Merry Christmas, and the best New Year ever!

Is BrianAlt being suggestive with you AGAIN?! Did I NOT tell him that I would punch him in the neck if he kept hitting on you?! HEY BRIANALT! KATE IS MINE! You stop suggesting dessert and such before I punch you in the neck!

Would suggesting Baked Alaska make it better or worse?

Huh? Huh? Whaddya think?

Yay! Snow! I'm glad you're looking forward to Christmas and that you're getting the snow you want. Unfortunately we aren't going to get as much snow here - it's going to be more rain/freezing rain/sleet followed by a few inches of snow. Although I love snow, I'm NOT a fan of ice. People here are kind of freaking out about traveling in it and so am I even though I only have to go across town.

I think it was about three years ago we had a pretty big ice storm. Nothing but ice....a couple of inches of the cold, heavy stuff. Power lines snapped, trees buckled and split down the center and crashed on top of houses...it was a mess. We were without power for about 5 or 6 days. It was terrible. I hope we don't ever have to go through that again.

Hopefully all your lines are buried and you won't have to worry about power outages for long periods of time.

Have a blast and Merry Christmas!

Your menu sounds yummy!

In trade for getting to leave the Frozen Tundra, Mr. POSSLQ and I will be having Pizza Rolls for Xmas dinner.

I'm glad you have good foods and good plans. Even if you end up with no guests, you'll have a nice feast and be toasty!

P.S. - It's 72 degrees and I have my windows open.

Christmas dinner sounds great! What time should I be there?

If I leave now I can probably be there by Friday. It's not THAT far of a drive...in the snow...in my topless, doorless Jeep...

White christmas in the purest sense :) glad you enjoy it, I know a lot of people who would be pissed about getting snowed in. But I would be happy like you too, it's too bad I live in the tropic :/

Your roast beef recipe sounds yummy. Have a fantastic christmas!:)
