The Cooking Calms the Crazy

I make it sound like being stuck inside during a cold snap is kind of fun. And it is for awhile. But then you get kinda nutty. So I cook. The cooking calms the crazy. I don't know why. The process of chopping and mixing and baking and sauteeing? I don't know. But this salad was inspired by Crissy. Go here to see how I made it. And I ate that while I was baking this cake. Because one of my friends moved into a new house today and since it's still stupid cold, I didn't want to help. So I made cake instead! Moving calls for cake, doesn't it? A cheery yellow frosted cake. With the same mix and frostings and fillings as the lovely cupcakes I made last weekend. I thought his 85 year old dad was going to kiss me when I took it over. And when I left he said, "You know. I kinda like apple pie, too." Hahaha! Like father, like son. I've been baking for this friend for three years. At least now they live together and can share.

Please ignore the crumbs. I couldn't figure out how to get them out of the deep plate without wrecking the frosting. Oh, and I have my Grandma's chili in the crockpot. It's going to be a good day.

To try and avoid crumbs, you need to set the cake down on strips of waxed paper or parchment paper....sort of slide the strips (you'll need 4 or 5) under the cake then put the frosting on the cake and then slowly pull each strip off...

Or you can use a wide tape, or any tape for that matter....

That cake is beautiful and my mouth is watering.

My theory about why cooking calms the crazy of being housebound in winter is because it's a way to connect with the nature that winter puts away.

You must not watch "Iron Chef." Those aren't crumbs, that is part of the plating. And all I can say is "good presentation."

Does the cake recipe include baking s-ooohhh-da?

My whole family went off skiing today and I sadly could not go. I activated my sciatica on a run a couple of days ago and can't ski until it calms down. Sigh. Boo-hoo me. I think I'm going to make a crock pot of chili today and maybe bake some bread to welcome my skiers home tonight. Thanks for the inspiration on a cold day.

We're going to go climb around on some ice by the lake with crampons strapped to our feet today, because we have crazy cabin fever. Staying in and baking sounds like a much more sensible way to go.

With all the cold recently I was busy in the kitchen too - chili, Tortilla soup and Chicken Pot Pie. Yep, all homemade.

I would guess it's the step-by-step process. Refocuses you.

This past weekend was definitely perfect for chili. Loved seeing your other creations, too! Happy Monday, Kate!

I agree the cake looks killer. And for the crumbs - I totally would have reached for the hose attachment on my vacuum. ;-)
