The Fertile Crescent

I've re-named my garden, The Fertile Crescent. Mostly because it is crescent shaped along the bottom edge. That, and I like naming things. Garden 2010 just wasn't doing it for me. This is Plan II. And the only things not in are the tomatoes and the peppers. I'm not growing them by seed and it's still too cold at night for those sappy little hothouse plants. Maybe June 1st.But look! The peas are sprouting. The seeds got all white and bulbous and then bam! They sprung up.
And check out these cute little radish seedlings. They almost look like 4 leaf clovers.
I built a new contraption today. This is a trellis for the butternut and summer squash. I looked online to see what they should look like and some of them were made of a very open fence mesh. Others were of the pyramid variety. I made do with wood from the bonfire pile, 13 nails, a ziptie, an old rusty shovel that Gay Boyfriend said, "Came with the house," and some concrete blocks of unknown origin. Didn't I do a good job?
Here it is! The green beans, beets, red cabbage and parsnips have done nothing. My dad said maybe I should consider replanting after the frosty evenings we had. My mom said, "You've got to be patient!" Grammie said, "You shouldn't have planted until Mother's Day in the first place." I think I'll wait until we've had some warmer temperatures and then see.
It's coming along, people. Coming along, very nicely. And Gay Boyfriend totally needs to mow.

Sweet trellis! Nicely done!

Those pea sprouts look feisty. Fresh peas are one of the best summer treats.

Look at you and your Blair Witch garden!

I'm not one for radishes but I love me some fresh raw peas straight from the garden.

You are full of Win for having a garden at your place. We have a similar small effort and it's just lovely.

Love the photo of you in your yard :) And the drawing of the plan, love it! I think I would have done the same thing.

Love, love, love the trellis. Try the radishes braised in a little butter and olive oil and then saute the greens in with them. I never thought of cooking radishes before but saw this in one of Deborah Madison's cookbooks I think and it was wonderful with some broiled fish.

I'm sure the trellis will work, but it kind of looks like a pagan altar of sorts...:)

Between the terms "fertile crescent" and "pagan altar" your search stats should be fun to look at.

Garden looks great.

What a fabulous garden! I LOVE that trellis, and your seedlings look very happy. My garden is a grassy mess these days, but I hope to get something into the ground soon. I look forward to seeing vines twining on your trellis!

Am jealous. Decided to plant mostly warmer weather goodies this year (chilis b/c my neighbor makes kick ass salsa, tomatoes, cukes, etc.) so I am waiting until this weekend to put them in.

All I have is my strawberry patch, broccoli, carrots and the chives).

Love your trellis - can't wait to see how well everything comes up!

I love your little garden map. I'd need one, too, to know what's growing where! I have lots of hope this will be a season of plenty for you!

I love that trellis!! It is rustic, artistic and functional. I am totally impressed.

I like the name Fertile Crescent too. I'm trying to come up with a name for our land.. maybe you could help?

I actually started a list and keep it tucked in my "land" file.. maybe I have to sleep there a couple of times to know in my bones what it should be called?

Over The Moon Acres
Fantasy Farm
Done Roaming Acres
HoneyDo Farm

That's a couple in consideration. Husband wants to call it "She spent our entire retirement fund and I have to work until I'm dead' But I voted no on that one. ;-)

any recommendations 'book wise' for a soon to be divorced apartment dweller who lives in the bowels of the Arizona desert with it's crazy ass hot summers?

i want to get my 'green thumb' on!!!
