Happy Feet Friday

I was going to skip posting because, well - there is no feet picture. I'm not happy. And it's raining. But I thought I'd tell you I helped The Good Doctor with a procedure this morning and I did not throw up or pass out. I've passed out before, but I'm learning. There's this little mantra that goes through my head. It sounds like this.

"Breathe. Unlock your knees. Breathe. Unclench your toes. Breathe. Don't pass out. Oh! Are your eyes going fuzzy? Breathe! Breathe! Breathe!" Then I think about bun bun or my garden or something. And then I just watch his face. He's so intense. I can watch his brain work. And I always know when he wants his scissors because he lifts an eyebrow and then kinda grunts. I told him that once and he didn't believe me, but oh well. I don't have to watch him cut into people if I watch his face. I like watching him stitch people up, but I can't handle the cutting into. That squicks me.

I'm not the best Medical Assistant in the world. Hell, I'm not even trained. But I can do it. And I'm not sure I'd ever help another doctor, but I can help him. Because he's patient with me and knows how badly I want to learn.

So happy unclenched feet. Because whenever I manage to get through it and clean up and when the patient is gone? I feel a momentary euphoria that I did it. Then I feel sick to my stomach for awhile. But I made it through. And I win.

This time.

Happy Feet Friday!

Great past few posts. Very cool imagery of working through what you don't want to see (unclench your toes, unlock your knees! LOL). Your eagerness to learn is awesome.

I hope you have a great weekend.

You have to assist? I thought you handled his surgical schedule, appointments, etc.. No matter how much self talk I did I could never pull it off. My sixteen year old son has to do all the first aid work around here - even when he was little! He has the brains, patience, steady hands and stomach for it.

But if you ever need a hog, chicken or lamb butchered you got your girl!

Heh. If you pass out from just watching surgery, then I could tell you some stories that would make you fall over. Like this one: I once had to hold someone's hand. And by 'hold someone's hand', I mean pick up their hand off the ground and pack it in ice while the rest of their arm (which was still attached to their body) was being put into the ambulance. I don't easily get skeeved out by blood and gore, but the hand thing was kind of freaky - there's just something profoundly "human" about a hand, and when it's lying there on the ground unattached, it has kind of an indescribable eerieness to it.

Sorry, completely off-topic, but I just had to share.

Again, I am in awe of you. I couldn't (willingly) do the medical assisting thing. The last time I found a tick on me I was home alone and had to drive to my husband's office to have him pick it off. And I still had mini convulsions.

It sounds=ed like you wanted to say that old line out of 30's movies "Come on feets, do your stuff" and run...

im glad to hear that i may still have a medical profession yet. i sat in on a procedure for my husbands business and almost passed out. it made me think twice about my hospital social work career.

No way. They'd be picking me up off the floor. I love medical shows about life-saving operations but absolutely have to turn away when the surgeons have to stitch up flesh. Hurl!

Way to go!

I have discovered that, when I am involved in gross or unnerving or frightening things, Chopin's Minute Waltz begins to play in my head. You can't really panic while listening to a boring waltz. It's a scientific fact, I'm sure.

Anyways, congrats on not hurling!
