Family Reunion

I hopped in the car last Friday, so excited to see the baby, but not so much excited about the family reunion. I've known about it for months now, and I've been working on my head to make sure my attitude was right when it actually happened. My mantra was, "It's for my grandma and I get to see the baby." I said it over and over and over whenever I would get a little anxious. Don't get me wrong. I do love my immediate family and some of my extended family. It's just when they all get together, there seems to be this horrible underlying tension of unfinished business that has nothing to do with me, but I FEEL it and it makes me twitchy.

On Saturday night, as I was getting ready for bed, I said to my mom, "I wasn't expecting to enjoy myself, but I had a really good time!" And she laughed and said, "I think you speak for all of us." So much for dysfunctional family dynamics.

Here's the main reason I had fun. Look at him! He's crawling all over the place and curious and playful and I swear, the kid does a trick once an hour just so we'll keep watching him. My Aunt. Proof that I learned my twisted ways from my family. She totally did see-food on command for the camera.Teething toys are for Aunt Kate, too.
And the main reason we were all there. Grammie. How I love her so. She's 94 years old and she's spunky and opinionated and yelled at my Uncle on Friday night. A mother's wrath never ceases. And she likes my hair short and doesn't hold back from telling me that I should have had it this way for the last 10 years. I miss him already. He was sleeping when I left and it was all I could do not to wake him up and cuddle him and kiss him. See that step behind him? He mastered it on Saturday morning and went after my brother who was sitting on the chair he's got a hold of. On Saturday night, I was upstairs putting my pjs on and I kept hearing cheering from the family room, so I went down to investigate and as I rounded the corner, my mom said, "Here's Kate!" And he clapped! Just for me! What a ham. He's got us all twisted around his little finger.

I always think it's so amazing when three (or more!) generations are able to celebrate together! Incredible!

That curly-headed child needs to have his cheeks pinched by a Green Canary.

If there is one thing I love more than babies, it's really old grandmama's.. My own Nanny died 11 years ago, at 94. Her birthday is June 26 and I miss her still.

She once told me, when I was sulking over some boy who dumped me, "you know what you do when a man walks out on you?" me: what nanny, what???

Nanny, "Shut the damn door"

LOLOLOL... and she was right.
